The former fishing village of Filey is a relatively quiet resort on the North Yorkshire coast and with an historic promenade, beautiful Edwardian architecture and an impressive 5 mile sandy bay (which won the Sunday Times ‘Beach of the Year’ in 2018) it’s a popular seaside destination.
Just north of the town is Filey Brigg, a long narrow peninsula which is a local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of it’s geological importance. The top of the Brigg has remains of a Roman signal station and is a great place to watch the sea; apparently it’s also a popular spot for sightings of whales and dolphins although on the cold blustery day we visited there were none to be seen!
